Vera Abaimova: Studio (E-Portfolio)

My E-Portfolio, all new and shiny-like.

Introduction:

The artist's studio is her space to think, to learn, and above all, to create. It is a very personal space that is often a reflection of the artist not only in relation to her work, but also of her as a person. In some cases, it can even function as a gallery showcasing the artist's work and progression.

In many ways, this e-portfolio is like my artist's studio, though it is considerably less messy and haphazard than a physical studio would be. Here is a collection of works, written, spoken, and visual that both highlight my knowledge of rhetoric and reveal some things about me as a person.

The first work in this portfolio is an essay on the rhetorical analysis of “The Library Phantom,” an artist with a project that fits into the, what I like to call, “ninja art” genre. The focus of this analysis was on the rhetorical context in which this art project was presented. In this essay I discuss at length the exigence felt by the anonymous artist, that is the modern day attitude towards reading. I also talk about the rhetorical situation of the project, which includes the various venues and the audience for this work. I also discuss the artist's strategy to capture her audience's attention through the use of social media.

The second piece is a recording of my “This I Believe” speech. I selected this speech to show my application of speech delivery skills learned in class. The speech was written as a reflection of personality as much as a presentation of rhetorical skills.

The third part of my portfolio includes three entries from my blogs, the first two from my Rhetoric and Civic Life blog, and the third comes from my blog about webcomics. With these pieces I discuss the rhetoric of cheap almost-toys, speech blunders and the malleability of Wikipedia, and I review one of my favorite webcomics, Land of Lions. Visual rhetoric is also involved, as each entry includes pictures specifically chosen to augment the things being discussed.

The final part of my portfolio deals with my interests outside of academics, namely art. There I discuss the importance of art in my life. As you will see by navigating throughout the portfolio, each page is accompanied by one of my original sketches.

If you have any questions or comments, feel free to send me a message. You can do that under the “Contact Me” tab. And with that the tour of my portfolio has begun.
